Looking a Gift Horse in the Mouth

OCTOBER 2020

What happens when one of a nonprofit’s most generous donors becomes involved in negative / public matters?  What about a potential major donor who already has ‘baggage?’  How much 'baggage' is too much?  How does a nonprofit organization determine whether to refuse (or even return!) such gifts?  As Kenny ‘The Gambler’ Rogers once said, ‘You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run.’

This session will engage fundraising professionals who have walked in those shoes, along with experts on crisis management and AFP’s Code Ethics for a comprehensive discussion around these issues, including lessons learned.  This session could not be more timely or relevant in today’s social climate.

 Panelists are:

  • Signe Swenson, a self-described recovering development professional who stepped forward in 2019 to disclose MIT Labs’ ongoing relationship with donor Jeffrey Epstein
  • noted nonprofit crisis management expert Dr. Fred Lane, Professor Emeritus, Baruch College Marxe School of Public and International Affairs
  • Mark Hefter, JC, LLM, CPA, Adjunct Finance Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology and AFP Ethics Chair; and
  • David M. Coyne, CFRE, President of The Sheridan Group, Moderator
