Major Gifts Benchmark Study

MAY 2020

A newly released study of charitable organizations across the U.S. has found that just 43 percent of organizations met their major gift fundraising goals in 2019, with about a third of participants saying they are satisfied with their organization’s pipeline for developing major gift prospects. The study, funded by MarketSmart, and designed in collaboration with DonorSearch, The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Washington DC Chapter, and The Association of Philanthropic Counsel, surveyed 580 charitable organizations of various sizes, primarily in the U.S., with a small sample in Canada.

Greg Warner, Founder and CEO of MarketSmart, discusses key takeaways from the report, how the results differ from a prior study conducted in 2016, and what implications this has on major gift fundraising at your shop.

MarketSmart is a software and marketing services firm based in Greenbelt, Maryland that helps hundreds of nonprofit organizations engage, qualify, cultivate and prioritize supporters for major, mid-level and legacy giving.

Greg Warner is the author of Engagement Fundraising and CEO and Founder of MarketSmart, a revolutionary marketing software and services firm that helps nonprofits raise more for less. He also invented the Fundraising Report Card and the DAFwidget. In 2013, Greg coined the phrase “Engagement Fundraising” to encapsulate his breakthrough fundraising formula for achieving extraordinary results. Using their own innovative strategies and technologies, MarketSmart helps fundraisers zero in on the donors most likely to support their organizations and institutions with major and legacy gifts.
