Is Prospect Research Donor-Centered? The Structure and Ethics of Prospect Research

This session will give people a birds eye view of research and when it is and isn't donor centered. We will highlight AFP & APRA codes of ethics and areas of importance when performing prospect research. From here we will go on a journey learning about the history of research, how we evaluate capacity, and what data is both available and predictive of philanthropy today. After the high level discussion, we will show how successful donor-centered strategy putting data to use for successful outcomes with a case study on targeted appeals followed by a discussion on changing privacy laws and how the nonprofit world is adapting.

Ryan is the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at DonorSearch, a local prospect research, screening, and analytics company that focuses on proven philanthropy. He has helped over a thousand nonprofits focus on data-driven fundraising. He is a card-carrying AFP DC member, current Secretary of The Giving Institute Board of Directors, a former APRA-MD board member, and volunteers with various organizations helping fundraising operations. In the new world that is Covid-19 he's started cooking more, playing old video games, and losing money to friends playing google hangout poker from his home in Silver Springs, MD.

T. Clay Buck, CFRE is the Founder and Principal of Tactical Fundraising Solutions, which helps fundraisers and nonprofits raise money more effectively and efficiently.  This year marks his 30th year in the sector having worked as both a frontline fundraiser and Senior Consultant with major national firms.  He is a certified Master Trainer and has held the CFRE since 2014.  Clay co-authored the Rogare Critical Fundraising Report for the United States and was recently named in the top 20 of Charity Influencers online.  He makes his home in Las Vegas, Nevada where he is owned by two Labrador Retrievers.
